Safe (1995)

Julianne Moore is a hollow hausfrau whose whole world turns against her in Safe (1995), Todd Haynes's daringly disturbing flick about a chick made sick by the poison of modern life. This wealthy beauty is going about her days the usual humdrum way when she's suddenly stricken by nosebleeds, seizures, creepy-crawly skin, coughing fits, and terrible dizziness. It seems that her sterile surroundings are terrorizing her with toxins, and no one believes that it's not in her head! The safety of the suburbs has become hell on Earth for this once-perfect Stepford Wife, and home is no longer where the heart is. Desperate, Julianne decides to escape to the desert. There, a group of New Agers with "Twentieth Century Illness" congregate to meditate on themselves and their environment at the feet of freaky guru Peter Friedman. Can Julianne make it through this crisis, or will this succulent desert flower succumb to existential misery?
