Career counselors present government positions as attractively secure employment opportunities, offering guaranteed retirement benefits, excellent health coverage, and something close to a no-firing policy that grants life-long immunity from unemployment lines. On the flip side, there is a dark facet to civil service, a shadowy realm of semi-official agencies whose operatives can be terminated without a moment’s notice with fatal health impact and where the only acceptable mode of resigning a commission is from within a body bag. The conflicted sub-contractor of Raven (1997) doubts he will survive another promotion, and he’s executed enough demotions himself to know that he’s going to be lucky if he lives long enough to complain about his skimpy Social Security payouts.
