Review

The family that pillages and plunders together often goes down united in a hail of gunfire but lives on eternally in the folklore borne of America's fascination with the outlaw mystique. A taut retelling of ruthless matriarch Kate "Ma" Barker and her sanguinary band of blood relations, Public Enemies (1995) is heavy on 1930s period atmospherics, Tommy guns, and rattletrap dialogue. The Barker gang is doomed from the moment the opening credits roll, but to their credit they flaunt their authority-defying bravado even as the inevitable rain of bullets pierces and forever severs their family ties. If there is any goodness in this world, Barker fans can take consolation in knowing that the clan will be reunited in hell.
