Toby Stephens is a world-weary World War I photographer who goes from snapping shots of corpses to debunking faked photos of ghosts and other supernatural stuff in Photographing Fairies (1997). His life has been one miserable mess after another—from marrying the girl of his dreams only to see her die 24 hours later to having to witness the ugliness of the world's goriest war, Toby's life has been quite a chore. Once the fighting's over, he settles down in London and starts taking apart people's snapshots of supposed spooks. But one day Frances Barber shows up with a photo of fairies she says her daughters took, and Toby can't get it out of his mind. He follows her to the countryside to see the fam, and after she meets a mysterious death he becomes even more obsessed—if the picture is real, does that mean he can talk to the fairies and get them to put his wife on the line from the Other Side?
