A vivid and critically acclaimed feature from prominent Hungarian auteur Márta Mészáros, Örökbefogadás (1975) chronicles the story of a middle-aged laborer (Katalin Berek) who desires a child with her longtime lover (László Szabó). Because the man’s been cheating on his wife in order to slip away with the factory girl, he’s understandably troubled about letting her get knocked up. Kata (Berek) gets around the obstacle, however, by deciding to adopt a wayward orphan (Gyöngyvér Vigh) whose life has been characterized by many of the same trials and tribulations as her own. Sensitively wrought and elegantly photographed, Mészáros’s film is quintessential arthouse fare, but there’s plenty to appeal to wider audiences. Just scope the lithe and nubile Vigh as she traipses in the buff if you doubt that this Hungarian drama packs a sensual punch.
