Two alienated French youths struggle to find their identities in early-1970s Paris in Olivier Assayas’s indulgent coming-of-age drama L' Eau froide (1994). Translated as Cold Water, the film follows Christine (Virginie Ledoyen) and Gilles (Cyprien Fouquet) as they turn to shoplifting, fireworks, and sexual experimentation as a means for curing boredom and escaping the ironclad grip of their overprotective parents. Assayas sprinkles his film with American rock staples and films the proceedings in a style that pays homage to his French New Wave forebears. His smartest creative decision, however, is to cast Ledoyen as his lead wayward teen; when the actress peels off her clothes for a seaside skinny-dip, she makes being a teen look endlessly rewarding.
