Indie darling Noah Baumbach hits the ground running with Kicking and Screaming (1995), a Gen-X comedy in the Slacker (1991) vein. Josh Hamilton leads an ensemble cast as Grover, an aspiring writer who’s too depressed about his girlfriend leaving the country to get much work done. With Jane (Olivia d’Abo) having the time of her life in Prague, Grover eases into a tedious rut that’s only deepened by unemployed buddies Max (Chris Eigman) and Otis (Carlos Jacott). Baumbach’s got a sharp eye for the highs and lows of life as a jaded twenty-something, but he’s also a pretty keen observer of the fairer sex. Kaela Dobkin and Perrey Reeves both peel off layers in alluringly photographed scenes of coital embrace.
