Set in 1930s Japan, the melancholy romantic drama Kantsubaki (1992) chronicles the coming-of-age of an innocent girl who is pushed into life as a geisha. From early childhood, beautiful Botan (Yôko Minamino) is abused by her father and is soon sold to an avaricious pimp (Toshiyuki Nishida), who lends the comely youngster to thugs and yakuza bosses. Naturally Yasuo Furuhata's film can be painful going, as Botan is subjected to quite a bit of the rough stuff. Fortunately our geisha heroine learns to dig the sex play, and she’s visibly pleased in one must-see bout of ferocious coupling.
