I'm Dying Up Here is a Showtime series about the 1970s stand-up world, based on the similarly named nonfiction novel I'm Dying Up Here: Heartbreak and High Times in Stand-Up Comedy's Golden Era by LA Times reporter William Knoedelseder. Produced in part by Jim Carrey and sort of inspired by his experiences with owner of The Comedy Store, Mitzi Shore, it begins with a comic named Clay (Sebastian Stan) who's just made it big and snagged a spot on The Tonight Show after years of performing for free at the acclaimed comedy club Goldies. While most of his fellow comics are happy for him, others like club lifer Bill (Andrew Santino) are pissed it's not them up there. After the show, he immediately walks in front of a bus, setting the stage for an examination on comedians' psyches: brilliant, funny, and often, a little broken. Throw in some Boston comics dead broke after their move to LA, a female comic fighting the old boys club and the constant battle for stage time and there were tons of places the show could have gone. But while you assume rock stars get all the groupies, this two season wonder was chock full of wonderful nudity that showed you plenty of stand ups had women willing to lie down with them. At least in the seventies, it was like three hahas got you easy hoo-hah! The ensemble cast is great, and features ladies baring T&A - like Ari Graynor when she wears nothing but panties on a bed, Jessica Prince when she shows boobs, butt, and a fluffy merkin; and Ginger Gonzaga, who shows her perfect ass while she wears nothing but a T-shirt. WTF? We've come up with some good punchlines that never got us women that fine! Rachel Joyce plays a stripper, Nicole LaLiberte lies in bed with her jugs out, and from open mics to scissoring dykes Xosha Roquemore and Ashley Romans explore their sexuality together! Then Sarah Stiles has a massive screaming orgasm on top of a dude, and so much more! I'm Dying Up Here has us hard as a rock down there!
