Human Capital (2013)

A story of money, power, and the true value of human life might seem like a hackneyed motif, but Human Capital (2013) contorts the typical tale into something far more illuminating. Based on the novel by American author Stephen Amidon, it follows three major characters, recounting the same scenes multiple times from different points of view as the story progresses. The wealthy Bernaschi family has it all, but Celia Bernaschi (played by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) feels lost and washed up. The Ossolas are a struggling middle-class family with twins on the way, but Dino Ossola wants nothing more than money and power. A young Serena Ossola (Matilde Gioli) dates the Bernaschi son, creating tensions between the families immediately. They become forever intertwined when someone hits a cyclist on the side of the road and risk losing all of the money and status they’ve so ruthlessly accrued. Who committed the crime, and which family will have to shoulder the damages?

No thriller is complete with a dose of serious sexual tension, of course, and this movie doesn’t disappoint. Valeria reveals her cleavage while in the throes of an affair and gets groped by her on-screen husband, while Matilda bares her bouncing breasts while getting it on with her beau - or is he?
