Prejudice and xenophobia prevent a Danish woman and her Turkish lover from realizing true happiness in the sensitively wrought drama Halalabad Blues (2002). Although they come from different worlds, Kari (Anne-Grethe Bjarup Riis) and Cengiz (Peter Perski) are united by a smoldering attraction. Sadly the prejudices of their friends and neighbors work to create divisions between them, threatening their passionate affair. Director Helle Ryslinge uses Bollywood-style music and dance to convey emotions, though Riis’s revealing performance would never fly in Hindi cinema. The sexy Scandinavian offers multiple perspectives on her radiant curves.
