Detroit (2017)

There’s something about midwestern cities that make the ideal backdrop for award-winning movies about run-ins with the law. Fargo (1996) won Oscars for Best Actress (Frances McDormand) and Best Original Screenplay (The Coen Brothers). Years later, Chicago (2002) did even better with wins for Best Picture, Art Direction, Costumes, Editing, Sound, and Best Supporting Actress (Catherine Zeta-Jones). And then there’s Detroit (2017) which was named Outstanding Independent Motion Picture at the NAACP Image Awards. Under the direction of Kathryn Bigelow, this R rated flick takes viewers back to 1967 during the 12th Street Riot. It was a violent explosion of racism and the film brings all of that and more to the Algiers Motel Annex, where an African American man playing around with a starter pistol elicits the retribution of the Detroit Police force. For their work on the drama, Black Reel Awards nominations were bestowed upon Algee Smith for Outstanding Actor, Victoria Thomas for Outstanding Ensemble Member, and James Newton Howard for Outstanding Score. The movie also includes Hannah Murray and Kaitlyn Dever who play Julie Hysell and Karen Malloy, respectively. The white girls are having fun with the soul band The Dramatics until the fuzz bust in. When a cop tears off the dress of Ms. Hysell, we get to see the breasts and panties on Ms. Murray. Even though the context of the flesh flashing could be better, the view is still criminally hot. Suffice it to say, this pic drips with local color while oozing retro sex appeal!
