Review

The title character in the German drama Der Pirat (1997) isn’t a buccaneer of the parrot-and-eye-patch variety, but rather a heroin dealer in 1960s Hamburg. Jürgen Vogel stars as Jan, a free-spirited young man who gets caught up in the good vibes and “peace, love, and happiness” credo of his era. When the atmosphere darkens, however, Jan swaps hashish for harder substances and ends up pulling his brother (Sebastian Rudolph) into his dangerous game. Director Bernd Schadewald thankfully understands that no depiction of late-1960s Germany is complete without a few glamorous honeys; Christiane Paul and Laura Maori Tonke snort coke, boff, and lounge around without wearing a stitch.
