Liberated filmgoers were ready to see a shameless examination of the wild world of S&M. Instead, they got go-go dancers and Keir Dullea spreading fruit preserves on a woman’s titties. De Sade (1969) was one of the biggest flops in the history of drive-in epics, primarily because the producers tried to turn this biography of the Marquis de Sade into some kind of art film. But the climatic orgy is . . . um, climatic, and the femmes are fabulous--especially Uta Levka and Christiane Krüger getting in de nude for de Sade.
