In addition to marrying Candice Bergen in his lifetime, the late French auteur Louis Malle mastered many film genres throughout his critically-acclaimed career. During the 1950s, he shot the documentary The Silent World (1956), the thriller Elevator to the Gallows (1958), and the romantic pic The Lovers (1958). After conquering the war story Lacombe, Lucien (1974), Malle made the period piece Pretty Baby (1978), the crime flick Atlantic City (1980), the conversational comedy My Dinner with Andre (1981), and the autobiographical drama Au revoir les enfants (1987). If that’s not enough, the prolific filmmaker released the haunting experimental fantasy Black Moon (1975), not to be confused with the action movie Black Moon Rising (1986). This unique movie is about a literal war between the sexes where brother is pitted against sister. Cathryn Harrison stars as Lily, who stumbles upon a Lewis Carroll-esque world after a motor accident. She sees a unicorn romping among humans, rats speaking, and flowers weeping. Things get even more surreal when Sister Lily (Alexandra Stewart) opens up her shirt and offers her nude boobs to an old lady (Therese Giehse). The hungry granny happily latches onto the babe’s bare breasts while Lily (Harrison) and Brother Lily (Joe Dallesandro) watch. Can you say kinky? Indeed, this freaky flick is definitely a trip. And it concludes when Lily gets ready to breastfeed the unicorn! Talk about a twist ending. All things considered, Black Moon may give some audience members blue balls while those suckling on the screen appear Malle nourished!
