Bis ans Ende der Welt (1991)

Bis ans Ende der Welt (1991), otherwise known as Jusqu’au bout du monde, is a skinternational pic that’s out of this world. In the U.S., the R-rated movie goes by the title Until the End of the World, not to be confused with Turn Left at the End of the World (2004), A Home at the End of the World (2004), How I Spent the End of the World (2006), The End of the F***ing World (2017), or To the Ends of the World (2018). All right, all right, we get it, the end of the world is a great topic for a screenplay. Perhaps that’s why director Wim Wenders and his leading lady Solveig Dommartin came up with the idea behind this 1991 flick. At the time futuristic, the sci-fi story kicks off in the year of 1999! The plot has stuff about an orbiting nuclear satellite, friendly bank robbers, and the near extinction of human civilization. As you can guess, the movie is a bit of a mess. At least that’s how audiences felt since the pic was a box office miss despite the fact that it includes appearances by popular musicians such as David Byrne and Tom Waits. The film also features screen siren Jeanne Moreau and A-list actors Max von Sydow, Sam Neill, and William Hurt. If that’s not impressive enough, Ms. Dommartin flashes her rack! Alas, Solveig died of a heart attack at the young age of 45. But at least this film keeps her mamory alive.
