Waiting for the Barbarians (2020)

The sun never sets on the British Empire they say...  That saying is especially true for the far east where their empire stretched through the sun kissed and harsh environment of the Gobi Desert and the far reaches of Mongolia and beyond.  In Waiting for the Barbarians, we are dropped into a non-descript time and place of the Imperial 19th century British Empire in the far east, centered on a kind-hearted magistrate (Academy Award Winner Mark Rylance) of an outpost, that keeps a steady peace with the local nomadic tribes around the post.  When the new and vicious Colonel Joll (Johnny Depp) arrives for a visit, he inspires the idea that the locals are a hoard of barbarians who are going to ride through the gates of the town, killing and pillaging all the goods of the empire!  As the magistrate tries to convince him that the locals are peaceful tribes, he finds himself torn between his loyalty to the empire he comes from and the locals he's been living with for years.  The add insult to injury, the Colonel's right hand man (Robert Pattinson) is equally as cruel, and almost relishes in the torture of people.  Along the way, the magistrate has a fling with the local girl the ravishing Isabella Nefar, who shows us her rack by candlelight.  He also becomes an ally to a brutalized tribal women simply known as The Girl (Mongolian model Gana Bayarsaikhan), who shows her buns along with her back scars, and she proves to be an even bigger ally than he is aware of!
