Review
Revered Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar's Volver (2006) is a beguiling study of life and afterlife--sometimes gentle, sometimes bracing--that casts luminous Penélope Cruz as one of two sisters who return to the town where their mother died. Complications arise when they discover that mama (Carmen Maura) is not quite dead. Rather, she is a ghost who is committed to helping her daughters, even when murder and reincarnation get tossed into the mix. Volver is Spanish for "to return." And return to this film is what you'll do after viewing Penélope in her bra and Yohana Cobo out of her pajamas.
