Japón (2002)

Life asks little of us, only everything. Circumstances may compound, stacking up troubles and failures, layering insurmountable frustrations upon us, increasing the daily burden until the very thought of going on is a ludicrous taunt. Artistic of temperament, parched of spirit, a fast-living big-city painter travels to a remote Mexican canyon in Japón (2002), intending to snuff out the last dim sparks within him. The dismayed metropolitan has surrendered to the impossibility of hope. In his crushed condition, he encounters an old woman, pushing eighty, who makes her home at the edge of the world, in this canyon that appears to be so godforsaken. Is she a saint, or is she a human with all the physical needs and urges shared by all sinners? Will her open heart lead the despairing painter to see a richer canvas beyond what he had thought was himself?
