Review

A war bride returns to her small Icelandic hometown in The Seagull's Laughter (2001). Agga (Ugla Egilsdóttir) is a precocious 11-year-old who watches with equal parts mistrust and amazement as her cousin Freyja (Margrét Vilhjálmsdóttir), who left their provincial hometown years before as a plump teen with no prospects, return home in a flurry of laughter and perfume. Freyja has transformed herself into a glamorous and sophisticated woman, and claims to have been married to an American soldier killed in WWII; everyone in town is enchanted by the sexy widow in red, so Freyja sets out on a mission to find husband #2. But Agga is not convinced that Freyja is who she claims to be, and indeed the truth is more complicated than it appears. There's only one thing that's simple about this twist-filled drama, and that's the simple pleasure of ogling Margrét's Icelandic orbs as she canoodles with one of her many suitors. The Seagull's Laughter will give you a funny bone.
