After back to back films dealing with historical New England in both The Witch (2016) and The Lighthouse (2019), director Robert Eggers takes us to ancient Nordic times with The Northman (2022). In a Scandinavian riff on both Conan the Barbarian and Hamlet, the film tells the story of Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgard) who, as a child, witnessed the murder of his father (Ethan Hawke) by his father's brother (Claes Bang), who absconded with Amleth's mother (Nicole Kidman) and took over the kingdom. Amleth set his sights on revenge by becoming a great viking warrior and focusing all of his might on murdering his uncle, freeing his mother, and avenging his father, and though the ancient Klingon proverb states that Revenge is a dish best served cold, Amleth will soon find out that not everything was as it seemed when he was a child. In his quest, Amleth makes some time to romance a Slavic sorceress named Olga played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who makes her nude debut here, baring her ass in two different scenes at the hour and fifteen minute mark and the hour and forty seven minute mark! That'll have your compass pointing North, man!
