Review
The Good German (2006) is Steven Soderbergh's tribute to black-and-white melodramas of the studio era, filmed in old-timey style and shot through with homages to Casablanca (1942). George Clooney plays an American military journalist rooting around in the rubble of post-World War II Berlin, snooping for a scoop on the Potsdam Conference, when he comes upon a real humdinger: it's Cate Blanchett! The two of them used to be an item, but now she's turned her attention to turning tricks. Ever the curious one, George sniffs out something fishy involving Cate, her new lover (Tobey Maguire), and her missing hubby, an egghead who's got his hands on fancy supersecrets both the Americans and the Ruskies want.
