The Gilded Age (2022-2023)

Bust our your favorite corset and get ready for The Gilded Age, the newest series from Julian Fellowes, creator of Gosford Park and Downton Abbey. The series premiered on HBO in early 2022—after being initially announced to premiere on NBC a few years earlier—and is set in the titular time in American history in the late 19th century when the disparity in wealth between the classes was almost as wide as it is now. Carrie Coon stars as Bertha Russell, the wife of "new money" robber baron George Russell (Morgan Spector), who is determined to be welcomed into the upper crust of society, despite their fierce resistance to anyone that's not from "old money." The self-appointed guardians of the "old money" society are socialite Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) and her sister Ada (Cynthia Nixon), who take in their destitute niece Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and hope to raise her in the well heeled world in which they travel. We know, it all sounds like riveting, edge of your seat excitement, but trust us, it's not the laugh a minute thrill ride that description may lead you to believe it is, but rather a pearl clutching affair that's essentially the American Downton Abbey. If nothing else, the jump from NBC to HBO gives us the potential for some skin, which we came damn close to getting in the show's third episode when Carrie Coon wore a completely sheer nightgown to bed! The candlelight allows us to get a good look at her bare breasts underneath, which is more than we were expecting from such a buttoned down affair as this!
