Review

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, this historical dramedy is narrated by The Captain (Hoa Xuande), a half-Vietnamese, half-French man who uses his cultural identity crisis to his advantage, serving as a Communist spy within South Vietnam's pro-Capitalist government. We first meet him as a prisoner in a Vietnamese communist reeducation camp, being asked to explain everything that’s happened to him since the fall of Saigon. According to him, though it appeared to the outside eye that he was a member of South Vietnam’s secret police working alongside the CIA, he insists he secretly has been passing on valuable information about espionage to his comrades in the Viet Cong the whole time without his handler and recruiter (Robert Downey Jr) being the wiser. Almost distracting him from his mission, though, is Sandra Oh, who flashes her right funbag while the two bang on some bunk beds. Nice Viet-mams!
