Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci is renowned for stylish, sweeping epics that are visual extravaganzas and masterpieces of nonlinear narrative. Set largely in prewar Italy as Mussolini’s Fascists are consolidating their power, Bertolucci’s The Conformist (1970) follows the descent of an ambitious professor who joins the Fascists and is enlisted as an adjunct to their secret police. One of many themes examined by the film is the connection between the lust for power and the lust for lust. Expect an intense, complex, long and dense drama that is one of the most intellectual thrillers ever lensed. Also anticipate women of a beauty so ethereal as to conform to the standards of paradise.
