The conflict between public ambition and personal expression is often at the core of ongoing clashes between fathers and sons, especially when the dad and kid are the warring family members who provide the painful push-and-pull of Sweet Thing (2000). As a young artist, success and acclaim are always bittersweet at best, self-doubt seeming to come swiftly in the wake of laudatory notices. The mixed emotions of widespread notice are only more excruciating when the fledgling painter is being feted for his provocative themes and challenging imagery. The prodigy's father, in the meantime, is an image-conscious judge who is tuning up a campaign for election to Congress. Can't the kid just give the old man a break and reel in the controversy?
