A tortured writer embarks on a harrowing journey to discover the origins of her newly terminated romance in the German existentialist drama Schneeland (2005). Set high above the Arctic Circle in the bitterly cold snowfields of Lapland, Hans W. Geissendörfer’s drama centers on a newly widowed Swede (Maria Schrader) crossing the barren tundra of northern Sweden in an effort to find the place where she and her deceased husband first fell in love. Upon her arrival, Elisabeth (Schrader) discovers that the small homestead she visited years prior once served as the home of an abused woman (Julia Jentsch) who experienced nothing but sorrow and anguish in the place. Unabashedly dreary and cold, Geissendörfer’s drama may remind viewers of the films of Ingmar Bergman, right down to the gloomy themes and bombshell leading ladies. Looking past the morose mood, Geissendörfer’s film boasts countless opportunities for Jentsch and costar Susanne Lothar to lay bare their feelings then lay bare for a feeling.
