Pep Squad (1998)

They haven’t caught on like teen sex comedies, but there have been plenty of high school murder comedies since the indie success of Heathers (1989). Pep Squad (1998) is an underseen effort about a sweet senior who accidentally kills her creepy principal. Jennifer Dreiling recruits her boyfriend and two best friends to help cover up the death but is then blackmailed by Amy Kelly, whose character is determined to win the title of Prom Queen. This leads to a Battle of the Bitches, while you’ll be abusing your own Prom Night staff to Summer Makovkin’s amazing pool scene. The sexy scene occurs at the 29-minute mark, when Summer's perky peaches get plenty of screen time as she participates in some goofy pool-themed performance art. It's one minute and 13 seconds of heaven! About 20 minutes later Summer's chest globes come out again as she gets frisky with some guy. This indie gem shows a lot a vision in both execution and cinematography. The plot is presumably designed to be insane and weird, and the performances a bit melodramatic. The real standout in the flick is the Cherry character, who is a complete psychopath who effortlessly beats down nearly everyone she meets and that's before she doesn't make the nominations for prom queen! Once the reality that she won't be queen the real pandemonium breaks loose and viewers are subject to a barrage of silly violence that only a truly great B movie can get away with. It's just a shame we didn't get to see more 3 B's!
