A shrink makes the dangerous mistake of falling asleep on the job in Jean-Jacques Beineix’s astute French thriller Mortel transfert (2000). Jean-Hugues Anglade plays an overworked psychoanalyst who takes a catnap during a session with a patient and wakes up to find her dead. Instead of making the reasonable decision to go to the police, Anglade’s character gets himself in hotter water by covering up the mysterious crime, all while trying to get to the bottom of what might have happened to the sex-obsessed kleptomaniac woman who died in his office. Beineix certainly owes a debt to the Master of Suspense for this one, though Hitchcock never pushed the skin envelope with this much aplomb. Ovidie, Estelle Desanges, Hélène de Fougerolles, and Valentina Sauca all work hard to spice up the proceedings with ravishing reveals of Gallic flesh.
