A depressed economy causes undue hardship for a struggling blue-collar couple in the gritty made-for-TV production Hat er Arbeit? (2000). Wotan Wilke Möhring stars as Karl, a young welder who enjoys his job at a bustling German boatyard. When he meets the pretty twenty-one-year-old Kitty (Mina Tander) and the two decide to wed, Karl feels that his life is finally taking shape. Economic depression soon grips the coastal town, however, and when the pressures cause Kitty’s brother-in-law to take his life, the young woman wonders if her own husband won’t be next. Fortunately the welder finds an entirely different solution to his malaise by seeking solace in the arms of a local sexpot played by ravishing Katharina Wackernagel.
