Great Expectations

Great Expectations (1998)

No Nudity

Review

Based on the novel by Charles Dickens, Great Expectations (1998) updates this timeless story to late twentieth century New York City. Poor boy Finn (Ethan Hawke) fell in love with rich girl Estella (Gwyneth Paltrow) when they were children. As an adult, Finn is a successful painter due to the generosity of a wealthy benefactor (Robert DeNiro), and while he seems to have everything his heart could desire, he longs once more to be with Estella. Gwyneth Paltrow does show some flesh in this film, but not nearly as much as she did in her other film from the same year, Shakespeare in Love (1998). Here she poses nude for Finn to do a painting of, but the artsy camera angles and blurry handheld prevent us from seeing any sort of substantial nudity unfortunately! Perhaps it's best if you lower your expectations in order to better enjoy Great Expectations! The film adheres to the book thematically, but it does differ quite a bit in content. It's still translated quite well for a modern time. The cinematography and directing is at a high level, considering Alfonso Cuaron is at the helm. Any flesh fiend can appreciate the stunning Gwyneth Paltrow is absolutely stunning and plays her role perfectly. De Niro is, of course, superb in his role, and Chris Cooper is also recognizable in a breakthrough role. One thing's for sure, this flick is easy on the eyes, ears, and mind. Just lower your expectations for nudity and the experience will be unforgettable!
