Review

Go for Zucker (2004) is a German comedy that follows Jakob Zucker (Henry Hübchen), a shady ex-sports announcer from East German. When the Berlin Wall comes tumbling down, Jakob’s career also crashes, leading the newly unemployed dude to an unsuccessful bout of gambling. With a mounting debt and his family against him, Jakob rests all his hopes on winning a high stakes pool tournament. Just before the billiards competition is set to begin, the down-on-his-luck loser learns that his mother has passed. But this somber event has a silver lining—mom has left her estate to Jakob and his estranged brother Samuel (Udo Samel). However, there’s a catch to getting his hands on mom’s money—mother specified that her funeral must be done in Orthodox Jewish tradition. While Samuel is well-versed in religious tradition, Jakob must brush up on his Judaism. All this religious mumbo jumbo crimps Jakob’s pool-playing plans, because he must take part in a Shiva, a week-long mourning process that just happens to coincide with the tournament. The challenge for Jakob is to secure his share of his mother’s estate while still being able to attend his billiards battle. There’s little opportunity for you to play some pocket pool. With the help of your imagination, you might be able to bank one in when you get a faint view of Elena Uhlig’s butt crack when her pajamas bunch up during a heavy slumber. Elena will have you chalking up the head off your pool cue!
