Leaping back and forth between WWII-era Germany and the present day, the ambitious television drama Die Rosenzüchterin (2004) attempts to translate Charlotte Link's acclaimed novel for the screen. Hannelore Elsner stars as Beatrice Shaye, a woman under suspicion for murdering an elderly man in her rose garden. As she sits in prison, Shaye explains to her lawyer that she committed the murder to avenge the ex-soldier’s wartime offenses. Erhard Riedlsperger's drama is predictably grim, but it does offer some moments of guilty pleasure, including a scene of heavy petting on a local beach with Camilla Renschke (in her role as the young Shaye).
