A talented criminal psychologist rubs up against an uncooperative killer in the German thriller Die Mörderin (1999). Ulrike Mertens (Ann-Kathrin Kramer), a beautiful young doctor, is assigned to examine convicted felon Marga (Suzanne von Borsody), who is incarcerated for bludgeoning her husband to death. When Marga keeps mum on her motives, Ulrike prods the woman until she exposes certain vulnerabilities from her own past. Many critics have compared this chilling psychological study to The Silence of the Lambs (1991), although they’ve neglected to point out how much more fetching Borsody is than Hannibal Lecter. Ann-Kathrin Kramer also gives Jodie Foster a run for her money, flashing quite a bit more flesh than Clarice Starling ever did.
