Directed by Wolfgang Becker of Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) fame, Das Leben ist eine Basutelle (1997) is an urban comedy-drama set in Berlin and starring the German dream team of the late nineties, Jürgen Vogel and Christiane Paul. It focuses on a floundering young man who may or may not be infected with the HIV virus and his troubled romance with a lively but somewhat mysterious drifter. This not only leads to plenty of sex but also to the disclosure of many little secrets that they try to keep from each other.
