Betty Blue (1986)

A French repairman named Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade) gets a monkey wrench thrown into his mild-mannered existence when he falls for wild woman Betty (Béatrice Dalle) in 37°2 le matin (1986). Also known as Betty Blue, the erotic drama was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at both the Oscars and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. In fact, it wasn’t just a hit with critics, movie-goers loved it too. Based on Philippe Djian’s novel “37°2 le matin” (1985), the French flick was the eighth highest-grossing film in its homeland in 1986. Maybe that’s why other book-to-screen adaptations followed with The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), The Scarlet Letter (1995), The Postman (1997), and The Cat in the Hat (2003). Yet all of these pics proved to be box office bombs. No doubt, it’s because they lacked Mademoiselle Dalle’s je ne sais quoi — and naked body!
