The third entry in Japan’s notoriously graphic manga series Angel Guts, Noboru Tanaka’s Angel Guts: Nami (1979) is arguably the most shocking and brutal entry in an already infamous film cycle. Eri Kanuma stars as the steely, self-reliant heroine Nami Tsuchiya––a Japanese beat reporter who grows obsessed with her latest dispatch about the victims of sex crimes. As her exposure to this seedy, violent world of perversion grows, Tsuchiya finds herself longing for a little of the rough stuff––and I mean, very rough. Kyôko Aoyama and Miyako Yamaguchi join Kanuma for sexual power struggles that are as potentially alluring as they are depraved.
