Director Ilya Khrjanovsky offers an intimate and, at times, surreal glimpse into the realities of life in contemporary Russia in his austere, experimental drama 4 (2005). Marina Vovchenko, Sergey Shnurov, and Yuri Laguta star as Marina, Volodya, and Oleg––passing strangers who meet in a dimly lit tavern for a lengthy and disturbing discussion. Through the haze of whiskey, the three individuals recount intimate details of their lives, leaving listeners to try to separate fact from fiction. Likened to beautifully bleak films by Andrei Tarkovsky and Béla Tarr, 4 should appeal as much to flesh hounds as it does to cinephiles. Three ladies named Vovchenko––Irina, Svetlana, and the aforementioned Marina––display the best of new Russia with their sinful reveals.
