Wittekerke

Written and produced in Flanders, Wittekerke (White Church) is the name of a popular soap opera on Flemish Television in Belgium. The show focuses on the personal lives and the many relationships between young professionals in a Flemish seaside town. Wittekerke has the added bonus of being one big beer commercial. That’s right, the producers of the soap licensed the name Wittekerke to a brewery, obviously hoping to get some scrilla on the side by allowing the brewery to cash in on the soap’s popularity. Consequently, all beer consumed on screen proudly bears the Wittekerke label. Yes, drinking beer on network television, as well as showing tits, is perfectly legal in most parts of Europe, while us silly Americans with our puritanical values go gaga over Joe Millionaire. Speaking of showing tits, Wittekerke star Ann Ceurvels did just that in Badry’s Alibi, while Guusje van Tilborgh followed suite in A Zed and Two Noughts.
