The Early Life of Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder was born Winona Laura Horowitz in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Her parents Cynthia, an author and video producer, and Michael Horowitz, a publisher and bookseller, got the name from the nearby town of Winona, Minnesota, and paired it with Laura, the name of their friend writer Aldous Huxley’s wife. She’d end up choosing Ryder as her stage name because at the time she was deciding, her dad was listening to a Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels album. At age ten, Winona and her family moved to Petaluma, California, and just three years later she enrolled in the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Around that time, Winona started dying her naturally lighter hair jet black and was asked to keep it that way when she auditioned and won her first movie role in 1985’s Lucas. It would become part of her signature look as THE quirky goth girl of the 1980s and beyond! 

Winona Ryder’s Breakthrough Roles 

Winona quickly became the poster girl for the “strange and unusual” when she was perfectly cast in Tim Burton’s life-after-death comedy Beetlejuice in 1988. Combine that with the darkly satirical Heathers (1989) and her re-team with Burton for the brooding fantasy Edward Scissorhands, and Winona was already well on her way to becoming a Gen X icon. Throughout the 90s, her body was blossoming almost as fast as her career, and the see-through chemise in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) side of booby meat served briefly in The House of the Spirits (1994) and wet T-shirt wonder in Girl, Interrupted (1999) made audiences antsy for Winona had yet to uncork her giant jugs.

Winona Ryder on Hiatus

Winona saw a resurgence in the 2010s with roles in Black Swan and the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, but refused to show skin in the more matriarchal roles. In 2024, she was back to form when she reunited with Burton and company to revive her role as Lydia in the legacy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but we’re still waiting for her form to go back to being bare. We could also say the same for Gen Z goth girl Jenna Ortega, who plays Winona’s offspring Astrid in the new flick. Like mother, like daughter! Still, Winona will always give you a bone-a!
