Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel gets a modern telling (and a new ending) with Roland Joffe's adaptation The Scarlet Letter (1995), which starred Demi Moore in the role of adulteress Hester Prynne. For those of you who saw a letter pretty far down the alphabet back on your essays back in high school English class, Hester's living in late 1600's Massachusetts when she hears that her Puritan husband Roger (Robert Duvall) has probably been killed by Indians. Thinking herself a widow, she starts fondling Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale's (Gary Oldman) scarlet staff. She gets knocked up, but when it ends up Roger was just having a pow wow as a POW, her hubby comes back and it’s public humiliation time for Hester. Free embroidering, too, since while Roger's stuck wearing the horns of a cuckold, her clothes are now emblazoned with a big “A” for Adultery. The only thing that can let her off the hook is framing the Algonquin tribe for murder and hoping a full-fledged war breaks out. Yes, even if tit lovers had plenty of fun with the flick, lit lovers loathed how the depressing ending of the book got turned into a wild, action filled deus ex machina. But none of this keeps Demi from blazing up the screen with some classic nakedness, though. If your favorite letters are T and A, you'll enjoy watching Demi flashing both during a sensuous strip down before she does some bathing. Since a star's set vastly improve any version of The Scarlet Letter, if Demi wants to take her clothes off, let her! Lisa Joliffe-Andoh plays Mituba, a mute former slave who wasn't in the book, but will leave you speechless when she doffs her garb for some Victorian vucking. The nudity in this adaptation gets and A! With all due respect to other screen adaptations of The Scarlet Letter, when it comes to Demi's work as the publicly shamed cheater, you can't beat her!
