A sprawling fantasy epic from Russia based on the Mikhail Bulgakov of the same name, it first takes place in 1930s Moscow, where a famous writer (Evgeniy Tsyganov as the titular Master) finds out the theatre production of his work “Pilate” has been canceled and, prompted by an angry essay about the play from a critic, the writer ends up getting expelled by the union. He then holes up with a beautiful woman named Margarita (Yuliya Snigir), who convinces him to run with an idea he has about a satirical revenge novel inspired by these recent events. Suddenly we’re transported to the world of the novel, which has a talking cat named Behemoth, and also inside the ancient world of the play itself.
