Small Island (2009)

A Jamaican immigrant and her landlady discover a common bond in Small Island (2009). Illegitimate child Hortense (Naomie Harris) was raised in a family with charismatic Michael (Ashley Walters) after being rejected by her parents. Hortense is devastated when her older brother, whom she idolizes, leaves the island to join the British Royal Air Force. Many years later, Hortense agrees to a marriage of convenience so she too can flee to England; but once she arrives, she is bitterly disappointed in the racism and terrible living conditions she experiences there. Hortense commiserates with her equally miserable landlady Queenie (Ruth Wilson), and as the two women grow closer they discover they have something in common--Queenie had an affair with Michael, Hortense's long-lost brother, many years before. Since this is a Masterpiece Theater joint, don't expect much more than sideboob from Ruth in a soft-focus SKINterracial love scene. We'll stick with Masterbate Theater, thanks.
