Roots (2016) is a remake of the 1977 miniseries that unexpectedly rocked the nation, a brutal but powerful tribute to the novel by Alex Haley. A stark look at slavery, the story takes its time to address warrior Kunta Kinte (played by British actor Malachi Kirby) life and culture in West Africa, where he was ripped from as an adult and taken to America to be sold to a plantation owner. Dedicated to the legacy of his family's name, Roots portrays his relentless struggle on the plantation to survive and reclaim his life. Anika Noni Rose plays his love interest Kizzy, a beautiful and talented woman who protects Kunta from the plantation owner (and vice versa). The hint of sideboob we get when she's in bed with her man gives us a brief respite from the otherwise tragic tale, too. Needless to say, this rendition is just as moving as the first!
