Italian auteur Pier Paolo Pasolini updates the Sophocles tragedy Oedipus Rex (428 BC) from Ancient Greece to pre-World War II Italy in Oedipus Rex (1967). Also known as Edipo re, the foreign film features Franco Citti, Alida Valli, Carmelo Bene, and Silvana Mangano’s flesh! Even Signor Pasolini pops up in the pic as the uncredited High Priest. The movie begins with a baby suckling on his mother’s teat. Alas, the boy’s father is jealous of the attention his wife is paying to their son. So he takes his offspring out to the desert to off him. If you think that’s bizarre, the child is saved and raised by royalty. Things get even crazier when Oedipus (Citti) gets older and an oracle tells him that he must seek out and kill his father so he can — wait for it — marry his mother! Obviously, there are a lot of nutty people in this story. Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole bunch of skin to go with it. But we do get a quick glance at the regal mam on Queen Jocasta (Mangano). Just three minutes into the motion picture, the sexy brunette pulls out her left breast to nurse a baby. Oh mama! No doubt, that explains why the pic was nominated for a Golden Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival where it premiered in 1967. By 1970, the flick picked up a Kinema Junpo Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Since then, Mr. Skin has been fantasizing about Silvana’s Oedipussy!
