Fear is a clever invader, cloaking itself in disguises of vigilance or caution, invading the subconscious, screwing around down there, and popping up as a raging, kooky phobia. The trembling hero of No Rest for the Brave (2003) is terrified at the prospect of going to sleep. His paranoia has convinced him that slumber is a condition that once indulged he might never wake from again. To snooze, he shudders, is to die. Unfortunately, the longer he stays awake, the greater the horrors his unresting eyes perceive. The entire village where he lives is wiped out, murdered it would seem. Has he killed all these people, or are they only appearing to him in a dream that he is scared to admit he is having? This is the first existential question the hero asks himself, but it will not be the last or the hardest to answer.
