Question: What’s the big difference between John Huston’s historical flick Moulin Rouge (1952) starring Zsa Zsa Gabor and Baz Luhrmann’s jukebox musical Moulin Rouge! (2001) starring Nicole Kidman? Answer: A nip-slip. So that’s why the latter pic has an exclamation mark! The PG-13 movie fills the big screen with vivid sets and vibrant costumes as it reboots popular tunes from Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade" (1975) and “Roxanne” (1978) by The Police to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (1991). The result is a heart-pounding, pulse-racing metaphorical orgasm for the senses that lasts 128 minutes. Set in 1900, the story follows struggling writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) who lives in the Montmartre district of Paris. There, he visits the Moulin Rouge which is the hottest burlesque house around. In fact, it’s populated with plenty of scantily-clad ladies such as Nini Legs-In-the-Air (Caroline O’Connor) and a pretty prostitute (Tara Morice) who are more than happy to flash their gams. Did we mention Kylie Minogue pops up as the Green Fairy? Breast of all, the venue’s main attraction Satine (Kidman) titillates everyone — including famed painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo) and the Duke of Monroth (Richard Roxburgh) — with her sexy presence. Yet no one is more smitten than Christian. While he recites Elton John’s “Your Song” (1971) to her, she thrashes around on the floor in a skintight black bodice. As a result, Ms. Kidman treats us to a slip of the nip! No wonder Christian has a funny feeling inside that he can’t easily hide.
