Fidelity, thy name is Branagh! Kenneth Branagh, that is. His film adaptation of Hamlet (1996) is the first ever to remain completely faithful to William Shakespeare's play by keeping the whole whopping pile of words, words, words intact. We begin with Denmark in a rotten state—Prince Hamlet, a.k.a. Ken Branagh himself, is mourning his dead Danish dad. Was it natural causes, or is uncle Derek Jacobi to blame? It's more than a little suspicious that he jumped right into ma Julie Christie's bed, but Ken has to be sure, so he decides to coerce Derek into a confession. Meanwhile, Kate Winslet is crazy in love for Ken, but things get most horrible between her family and the pouty prince when he does something bad to Kate's beloved dad.
