Based on a novel by Onriku Dan, the scintillating erotic sequel Flower & Snake II (2005) provocatively skirts the boundary between art and pornography as it examines serious questions about love, desire, and self-restraint. Jo Shishido stars as Takayoshi, a respected Tokyo art critic whose loving marriage to the young and beautiful Shizuko (Aya Sugimoto) is complicated by the fact that he’s unable to please her sexually. Worried that his wife is unsatisfied, Takayoshi arranges for her to travel to Paris, where she immediately falls under the spell of a graphic artist (Kenichi Endo) whose canvases deal overtly with carnality. As the pair begins a smoldering affair, Shizuko becomes caught between fidelity and desire. Director Takashi Ishii stops just short of softcore in his depiction of a heroine discovering her sexuality for the first time. T&A shots abound from Sugimoto and costar Fujiko, neither of whom leave anything to the imagination.
