Modern straight-to-video horror pics provide one of the most reliable alternatives to standard big-studio fare, and Emily Haack, the reigning scream queen of the newest wave in terror skinema, is an earthy, fleshy, fierce, and feisty alternative to sugar-coated confections from the LaLa Land dream factories. There is nothing manufactured about Emily's swaying big-girl chest bombs, nor about her gut-quaking reactions to the twisting plot torments in such razor-edged shock triumphs as Scrapbook (2000) and I Spit on Your Corpse, I Piss on Your Grave (2001). The primary special effect seems to be to take Emily's clothes away, strip off her makeup, update the pleasures of the Marquis de Sade, and keep the cameras rolling. Obviously, these masterpieces of muff and mayhem should be viewed in their unrated versions whenever possible.
